In mid-November the lights go on in Cologne (Köln), Germany. Here are the 2026 dates and opening hours of the big markets as the organisers have published them, a route you can walk in one evening, ideas for December and where to go once the stalls close.
Scarf on, lights on, let’s go.
The market by the Rhine and the one in the park open first, three days later the lights go on at the cathedral and on the Neumarkt, and the old town follows after Totensonntag.

Five markets, five moods. All of them are in the city centre and easy to reach by tram and train.
Roncalliplatz · 16 November – 23 December
The classic, right in front of the cathedral: more than 140 stalls with crafts, gifts and food, and in the middle a stage under a sparkling tent of lights with more than 100 free performances every year. If it is your first Christmas market in Cologne, this is where most people start. Stop: Dom/Hbf, right next to the main station.
Alter Markt & Heumarkt · from 23 November
The old town dedicated to the Heinzelmännchen, the little helpers who, according to a Cologne legend, secretly did the craftsmen’s work at night. More than 100 stalls in themed lanes, and on the Heumarkt a big outdoor ice rink with straights over 100 metres long, plus lanes for Eisstock, a German cousin of curling. The organisers call it Cologne’s largest Christmas market. Stop: Heumarkt (lines 1, 5, 7, 9) or Rathaus (line 5).
Neumarkt · 16 November – 23 December
Right in the middle of the shopping district: a sky of stars made of lights glows above the wide lanes, and angels and illuminated fairy-tale creatures on stilts wander between the stalls. Lots of crafts and one-off pieces, too. Stop: Neumarkt, one of the big KVB hubs.
Chocolate Museum · 13 November – 3 January
The Christmas market by the water, on the Rhine in front of the Chocolate Museum (Schokoladenmuseum), with a maritime touch and a view of the Rheinauhafen. From the old town you simply walk along the riverbank. Entry is free.
Stadtgarten · 13 November – 23 December
The quieter market in the park near the Belgian Quarter: wooden huts under old trees and more than 60 makers who change every week, with crafts, handmade pieces and design. Opening night, Friday 13 November, starts at 6 pm with a concert; the makers are there from 14 November.
The four markets in the city centre are within walking distance of each other; only the Stadtgarten is a little further west.
| Market | Where | Nearest stop |
|---|---|---|
| Cathedral market | Roncalliplatz, right next to the cathedral | Dom/Hbf (main station) |
| Heinzels Wintermärchen | Alter Markt and Heumarkt in the old town, towards the Rhine | Heumarkt or Rathaus |
| Markt der Engel | Neumarkt, in the middle of the shopping district | Neumarkt |
| Harbour market | on the Rhine, in front of the Chocolate Museum | on foot from the old town, along the river |
| Stadtgarten market | in the Stadtgarten park, near the Belgian Quarter | Köln West station (Bahnhof West) |
Totensonntag is the last Sunday before the first Sunday of Advent, a quiet day of remembrance that is specially protected in every German state. In 2026 it falls on 22 November. Because most Cologne markets open before it, that Sunday is different: the cathedral market and the Markt der Engel stay closed, and the harbour and Stadtgarten markets only open at 6 pm. Heinzels Wintermärchen starts the day after.
One week earlier, on Sunday 15 November (Volkstrauertag, another day of remembrance), the harbour market opens at 1 pm. The first Sunday of Advent is 29 November. From then on the weekends are the busiest, so pick your evening early.
The city-centre markets are so close together that you can walk between them in one evening. From 23 November, when the old town is open too, this order works best:
After that, dinner in a brewery pub or one more bar: ideas below. Prefer the market in the park? Pair the Stadtgarten with an evening in the Belgian Quarter, right next to it.
Many visitors from the US and elsewhere see Cologne on a Rhine river cruise, often with just one afternoon and evening in town. The good news: the centre is compact, and four of the five markets are within walking distance of each other.
The markets are the reason most people come, but December in Cologne has more to it. A few ideas that work in the cold:
The landmark
A UNESCO World Heritage Site right next to the main station, and in Advent the backdrop for the busiest market in town. Go inside for a quiet moment between two market rounds.
Rainy day
Two of Germany’s best answers to grey weather, both in the city centre: Museum Ludwig by the cathedral for Pop Art and Picasso, the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum for old masters and impressionism.
Sweet
On the Rhine at the Rheinauhafen, right where the harbour market is. Easy to combine on the same afternoon.
On ice
The ice rink of Heinzels Wintermärchen runs until 10 January, closed only on 24 and 25 December.
Warm up
A thermal spa in the Rheinpark on the Deutz side of the river, with thermal pools, saunas and a view of the cathedral. Just right for the morning after.
After dark
Brewery pubs in the old town, small bars in the Belgian Quarter, clubs on the Ringe. More in our Cologne nightlife guide.
The markets close between 9 and 10 pm, and that is when the evening really starts. A few ideas, by mood:
Classic
Long shared tables and Kölsch in small glasses: the place to warm up after the market.
Stylish
Small bars, good wine and cocktails. Little Link on Maastrichter Straße is worth it.
Young & loud
Pubs packed close together, busy even on weeknights, for when you are not ready to go home.
Dancing
Around Friesenplatz and Rudolfplatz the night goes on until morning.
Prefer to go out with a group you have not met yet? Organised pub crawls run in Cologne, too; read recent reviews before you book.
Golden Flame
Golden Flame is our event series in Cologne: a masked ball at the Flora, Halloween at Wartesaal am Dom and open airs at the Rheinterrassen, for 1,000 to 2,500 guests per event. What we do next, you will hear first on Instagram @goldenflame_events.

Cologne main station is a major rail hub right next to the cathedral, so the cathedral market is a few minutes’ walk from your train. Typical journeys, as listed by the rail and bus operators (check current timetables):
| From | How | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Amsterdam | Direct ICE, 2 h 37 | Also stops in Utrecht and Arnhem |
| Brussels | Direct ICE or Eurostar, about 1 h 50 | Booking early is usually cheaper |
| Paris | Direct Eurostar, about 3 h 20 | A weekend trip without flying |
| London | Flights to Cologne Bonn or Düsseldorf; by train with Eurostar and ICE in just over 5 hours | From Cologne Bonn Airport, the S19 or RE 6 runs to the main station |
| Frankfurt Airport | ICE to Cologne main station in about 50 minutes | The easiest long-haul route, including from the US |
Staying over? Around the cathedral and the main station you can walk everywhere, and for Advent weekends it pays to book early.
Belgian Quarter · €€
On the Hohenzollernring, where popular German late-night talk shows were once produced, and it shows: neon, chrome and a bar that is open around the clock. Friesenplatz stop is a two-minute walk, with line 5 to the cathedral.

First up, on 13 November, are the harbour market by the Chocolate Museum and the market in the Stadtgarten. The cathedral market and the Markt der Engel on the Neumarkt follow on 16 November, Heinzels Wintermärchen in the old town on 23 November. As of October 2026, according to the organisers.
The cathedral market, the Markt der Engel, the Alter Markt and the Stadtgarten until 23 December. The harbour market stays open until 3 January and the Heumarkt with the ice rink until 10 January 2027. In the evening, the markets close between 9 and 10 pm depending on the day.
On Totensonntag, 22 November 2026, the cathedral market and the Markt der Engel stay closed. The harbour market and the Stadtgarten market open at 6 pm that day, and Heinzels Wintermärchen only starts on 23 November.
Yes, if you love Christmas markets: Cologne has several big ones close together, right by the cathedral and the main station, plus museums for rainy days and plenty of evening life. Be ready for crowds on Advent weekends, early darkness (around 4:25 pm in mid-December) and cold, often damp weather. Weekday evenings are the most relaxed time to go.
It depends on what you are after: the cathedral market for the setting, Heinzels Wintermärchen for the old town and the ice rink, the Markt der Engel for the sky of lights and the crafts, the harbour market for the Rhine and the Stadtgarten for a quieter evening in the park. The best evening combines two or three of them.
Yes. The cathedral market, the old town markets, the Neumarkt and the harbour market are within walking distance of each other and easy to combine in one evening. Only the Stadtgarten is a little further west, near the Belgian Quarter.
River cruise ships tie up at different landing stages along the Rhine in Cologne, and your ship’s daily programme names yours. Ask at reception for the way to the cathedral: the cathedral market is right in front of it, and Heinzels Wintermärchen in the old town is a short walk away.
Most visitors feel comfortable in Cologne. Usual big-city sense applies, especially late at night around busy squares and the main station: plan your way home, keep your valuables close in the crowds and stay with your group. Night trams run on weekend nights, and 112 and 110 are free from any phone.
Yes, at Heinzels Wintermärchen on the Heumarkt: a big outdoor ice rink with straights over 100 metres long, plus lanes for Eisstock. In 2026 it is open from 23 November to 10 January 2027, closed on 24 and 25 December.
The dates are set, so is the route. And if you would like to see Cologne on a party night, too, here is what is coming up at Golden Flame.
