Halloween · Köln, Germany
This year Halloween falls on a Saturday, and the day after is a public holiday in Cologne (Köln), Germany. Here is everything visitors ask us: is Halloween really a thing in Germany, where the city celebrates, what to wear, and how our own Halloween night, Spooky Flame, works.
Beautifully spooky. And very loud.
Halloween could hardly fall better than this year. What you need to know to plan with your crew:
This year: Sat, 31 October, 10 pm – 4 am, Wartesaal am Dom, Cologne, 18+. Tickets →
For people in their twenties: yes, very much, just in its own way. Halloween is not an old German tradition. American Halloween customs reached Germany and much of Europe in the 1990s, and carnival played its part: when much of the 1991 carnival season was called off because of the Gulf War, the carnival and costume trade started promoting Halloween instead (source, in German).
Today you will see a few children trick-or-treating in residential streets, but for adults Halloween is above all a costume party: club nights, house parties and themed events across the city. Cologne is a natural fit. Thanks to carnival, dressing up is part of the city's DNA, and eleven days after Halloween, on 11 November at 11:11, the next carnival season officially begins.
One question we hear from visitors a lot: will I be the only one in costume? At an ordinary club night, not everyone dresses up. At Spooky Flame you will not stand out, because everyone comes in costume.
Costume culture
Carnival has trained Cologne for generations. Forgot something at home? The costume shop Deiters has several stores in the city, see deiters.de.
Easy to reach
Direct trains from Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf, two airports nearby. Our Halloween venue is inside the station building. All routes in Visiting Cologne.
Compact
Old Town, the Belgian Quarter, Ehrenfeld and the student quarter around Zülpicher Straße are close together, so the weekend is about the city, not about commuting.
Open
People in Cologne are famously chatty, and a costume is the easiest conversation starter there is. You will not stay a stranger for long.
Around 31 October there is something going on almost everywhere. Pick the part of town that suits your night:
| Mood | Where | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Casual & spontaneous | Zülpicher Viertel | Student quarter, packed bars, lots of costumes. Start here and see where the night takes you. |
| Creative & different | Ehrenfeld | Independent venues, quirky parties and costumes that are a little more original. |
| Club night | The Ringe & city centre | The classic club strip around Friesenplatz and Rudolfplatz: music, people, a full dance floor until morning. |
| Electronic until morning | Big clubs such as Bootshaus (Deutz) | Their own Halloween parties with techno and house; check the clubs' channels for the line-up. |
| A fully staged night | Wartesaal am Dom | Spooky Flame by Golden Flame: decoration, everyone in costume, house music to arrive, then sing-along party hits. |
More on the neighbourhoods in our Cologne nightlife guide.

At Halloween we turn the lights down. Spooky Flame is the Halloween night by Golden Flame, the event series from Cologne: in 2024 at Goldfinger Club, in 2025 and 2026 at Wartesaal am Dom, the historic waiting hall inside Cologne's main station. Last year giant spiders hung beneath the vaulted ceiling, a sky of black and orange balloons floated over the dance floor and pumpkins glowed next to our neon flame.
The music: house to arrive, then more and more of a party, with hits and songs the whole room sings along to, plus live moments. And a crowd that clearly puts love into its costumes, from a single painted skeleton line to a full film character.
Spooky Flame 2026 · at a glance
Photos from the last two years are in the Spooky Flame 2025 gallery. If masks suit you better than costumes: Golden Mask, our masked ball at the Flora, welcomed around 2,100 guests at its premiere and is one of the largest masked balls in Europe. Its next date will be announced on Instagram @goldenflame_events.
Halloween has two faces. One is plastic fangs and a full-body costume that starts to itch by 11 pm. The other is a look that seems cast for a film and still takes twenty minutes. We love the second one, and it travels well, too.
The safe base
A blazer, a corset top or the little black dress you already love, plus bat ears, cat ears or lace gloves. Looks like an evening outfit, reads clearly as Halloween.
Instead of a mask
Skeleton lines like a pencil sketch, a painted clown face or a fine glitter scar. Lasts all night and leaves your face free.
For him
A dark suit plus one recognisable detail, like a red bow tie and a wig or white gloves, and you are a film character without the costume-shop look.
Together
One theme for everyone, each person with their own version. Five takes on one idea look better in every photo than five identical costumes.
Travelling light? Pack a black base that you would wear anyway and buy the one strong detail in Cologne. More ideas with photos from Spooky Flame are in our costume guides for her, him and couples and for groups (in German, the pictures speak for themselves).

Cologne main station is a major rail hub with direct trains from across Germany and its neighbours, and our Halloween venue is inside it. Typical journeys, as listed by the rail and bus operators (check current timetables):
| From | How | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Amsterdam | Direct ICE, about 2 h 40 (Utrecht about 2 h 10, Arnhem about 1 h 40); FlixBus from about 3 h | Arrive in the afternoon, check in, get ready |
| Brussels | Direct ICE or Eurostar, about 1 h 50; from Liège by FlixBus about 1 h 40 | In Flanders the autumn school break starts right after Halloween |
| Paris | Direct Eurostar, about 3 h 20 | Halloween is the last weekend of the Toussaint holidays |
| London | Direct flights to Cologne Bonn or Düsseldorf; by train with Eurostar and ICE in just over 5 hours | In most of England and Wales, half term is the week before |
| Frankfurt Airport | ICE to Cologne main station in about 50 minutes | The easiest long-haul route, also from outside Europe |
| Elsewhere in Europe | Many cities have direct flights to Cologne Bonn (CGN) or Düsseldorf (DUS) | From CGN the S19 or RE 6 takes you straight to the main station |
Most people come in twos or with their crew, and more guests come on their own than you would think. Coming solo? Just as welcome. In a room full of costumes, compliments fly back and forth all night, and even quieter people find their place. If that is you, our guide Meeting people in Cologne has more ideas for your stay.
Celebrating something? Hen parties, birthdays and groups of friends are a big part of every Golden Flame crowd. The easiest way is for one person to buy tickets for everyone. We do not take reservations, but there are tables, first come, first served. Planning a hen weekend? Here is our hen party guide for Cologne.
Wartesaal am Dom is inside Cologne's main station, which is busy around the clock. Arrive together, leave together and agree on a meeting point in case phones die. At every Golden Flame event there are more security staff than required, out and about everywhere and there for you straight away.

Yes, especially by young adults, but differently than in the US. Halloween is not a traditional German holiday; American customs arrived in the 1990s. Today a few children go trick-or-treating, while for people in their twenties Halloween is mainly a costume party night with club nights, house parties and themed events.
Halloween is on Saturday, 31 October 2026. The day after, Sunday 1 November, is All Saints' Day, a public holiday in North Rhine-Westphalia, so the party can run long into the night.
Not at Spooky Flame: everyone comes in costume, from a little twist to a full film character. At ordinary club nights in Germany only part of the crowd dresses up, so if a costume is what you are looking forward to, choose a party where it is part of the idea.
It depends on the night you want. For casual bar hopping in costume, the student quarter around Zülpicher Straße. For creative parties, Ehrenfeld. For a classic club night, the Ringe, and for electronic music, big clubs such as Bootshaus host their own Halloween parties. For a fully staged Halloween night with decoration and everyone in costume, there is Spooky Flame by Golden Flame at Wartesaal am Dom, our own event.
Everyone comes in costume, that is what makes the night so special. Go all out on the details or keep it to a little twist: what matters is that you are celebrating with us.
Spooky Flame is 18+. Bring your ID card or passport in the original; a photo of it is not accepted.
We have never had door sales: so far, every one of our events has sold out in advance. Tickets are sold online in phases via ticket.io, the current price including all fees is on faya.events/en/tickets.
Yes. Most people come in twos or with their crew, and plenty come solo. A costume makes it easy to start a conversation, and at Spooky Flame security staff are out and about all night and easy to approach.
By train if you can: Cologne main station sits right next to the cathedral, with direct trains from Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf. From Cologne Bonn Airport, the S19 and RE 6 run straight to the main station. Wartesaal am Dom is inside the station building.
Costume ready, crew informed, train booked? Then we will see you at Wartesaal am Dom. Everything about the night and the tickets is on one page.
