Solo · New in town · Köln
Cologne (Köln) has a reputation as one of the chattiest, friendliest cities in Germany, and it is well earned. Whether you are travelling solo, starting a semester abroad or just moved here for work: these are the places and moments where people here really connect, and how to go out alone without feeling alone.
Find your people.
| Your situation | Where to go | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| First evening in town | A traditional brewery pub in the Old Town or Ehrenfeld | Long shared tables, a waiter who chats, and conversation starts by itself |
| Sunny afternoon | The Rhine meadows and the Rheinboulevard steps in Deutz, Aachener Weiher in summer | Everyone is outside, music, picnics, sunset over the cathedral |
| Wednesday evening | Social Melting Pot, a weekly meetup with language flags | Built for meeting people: most come on their own |
| A weeknight | The student quarter around Zülpicher Straße | Busy even from Monday to Thursday, young and relaxed |
| Exchange semester | ESN Köln and UniSport Köln | Events, trips and sports for international students |
| Moved here for work | InterNations Cologne and Meetup groups | Regular get-togethers for people who are new in town |
| Travelling solo | A hostel with a bar or common room, a free walking tour | Other travellers who are also looking for company |
| A big night out | A themed event where coming alone is normal, such as Golden Flame | A shared theme gives everyone something to talk about |
External groups and venues are independent; check their pages for current dates. Friendship apps such as Bumble BFF are another way to find company.

Going out on your own feels bigger in your head than it is in real life. A few things make it easy in Cologne:
Solo · Golden Flame
Golden Flame is our event series in Cologne, with 1,000 to 2,500 guests at the Flora, the Rheinterrassen by the Rhine and Wartesaal am Dom. Most people come in twos or with their crew, and more guests come on their own than you would think. Coming solo? Just as welcome. Quieter people find their place, too: the music carries the night, house to arrive, then sing-along party hits.
Every event has its own theme, so there is always something to talk about. And a few days later the photos are in the gallery.
Next event – Spooky Flame: Sat, 31 October, 10 pm – 4 am, Wartesaal am Dom, Cologne, 18+. Tickets →
Prefer a smaller circle? Secret Flame is our smallest format, by invitation; you can request an invitation.

Where to go out in each neighbourhood: our Cologne nightlife guide. Getting here and where to stay: Visiting Cologne.
Go where conversation is normal: the long shared tables of traditional brewery pubs, the Rhine meadows in summer and the student quarter around Zülpicher Straße. Exchange students find events at ESN Köln and UniSport Köln, newcomers at InterNations, Meetup groups and the weekly Social Melting Pot meetup on Wednesdays. For a big night out, themed events where many guests come alone, such as Golden Flame, make it easy.
Yes. Cologne is compact, well connected by tram and known for open, chatty people. The old town, the Rhine promenade and the main nightlife quarters are close together, and there are hostels, walking tours and events where travelling alone is completely normal.
No. Plenty of people go out alone, especially in big cities like Cologne. At Golden Flame events most people come in twos or with their crew, and more guests come on their own than you would think.
Most visitors feel comfortable in Cologne. Usual big-city sense applies, especially late at night around busy squares and stations: plan your way home, share your location with a friend and keep your drink with you. Night trams run on weekend nights, and staff and security are there to help.
International students meet through ESN Köln, the Erasmus Student Network, and UniSport Köln. Expats and newcomers meet through InterNations Cologne and Meetup groups.
No. English goes a long way, especially among younger people. A few words of German still open doors, starting with Prost, the word you will hear every time glasses meet.
Yes. Coming solo is just as welcome. Entry is 18+ with an ID card or passport in the original, tickets are only sold online in advance, and with a ticket you can come in any time.
Whether you come alone or bring the friends you made yesterday: here are our next dates.
